Diana was involved in the Odessa Jewish community even as a young child, attending classes and activities at the Migdal center and, later on as a teenager, at Hillel. She was also bringing her friends along to programs run by the Orthodox Tikva-Or Sameach community. After Diana graduated from university, she traveled to Germany for an internship working in orphanages and with foster home agencies. Upon returning to Odessa, she was appointed director of the Chabad Odessa orphanage. Then came a period of several years in which Diana left Odessa and the Jewish professional world. When she moved back to Odessa with her husband and children, the family joined Tikvah-Or Sameach as members and, looking for a new outlet for activism, Diana became engaged with the local volunteer center, eventually taking its helm.
